Genes of the MHC Region

The MHC (major histocompatability complex)
region is a region of highly polymorphic genes
(about 10–50 alleles per locus). It spans about
3500 kb on the short arm of chromosome 6 in
humans and on chromosome 17 inmice. Collectively,
these genes are called immune response
(Ir) genes. They are expressed on the surface of
various cells. Their products can be demonstrated
serologically or by cellular reactions in a
mixed lymphocyte test. MHC genes control the
immune response to antigen proteins by
specific binding to T cells.
