Immunoglobulins are the effector molecules of
the immune system. They occur either as membrane-
bound cell surface receptors or as free
antibodies. The enormous diversity of their
variable regions enables them to bind many
very different antigens. Although they differ in
details of their function, they share a relatively
simple basic pattern, which is derived from a
common ancestral molecule
